Song written by Peter Gabriel. Originally released on his third self-titled album (1980), often referred to as ‘Melt’, owing to its cover photograph. The song was performed as early as on Gabriel’s 1978 tour for his second album. An earlier studio version was to be the A-side of the first single released in advance of the album in Europe and Japan, but a record company executive thought Robert Fripp’s guitar solos were not radio-friendly enough. This earlier version wound up as the B-side of the advance “Games Without Frontiers” single instead in those territories, and remains unreleased on CD. The album version of this song appeared as the A-side of a 12″ single in the United States and Canada.

Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel sang this song during the Bill Duffield memorial concert at the Hammersmith Odeon on 12 May 1979.

Lyrics

I got no means to show identification
I got no papers show you what I am
You’ll have to take me just the way that you find me
What’s gone is gone and I do not give a damn

Empty stomach, empty head
I got empty heart and empty bed
I don’t remember
I don’t remember
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all
Strange is your language and I have no decoder
Why don’t you make your intentions clear
With eyes to the sun and your mouth to the soda
Saying, “Tell me the truth, you got nothing to fear

Stop staring at me like a bird of prey
I’m all mixed up, I got nothing to say
I don’t remember
I don’t remember
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
Absolutely anything at all
I don’t remember
